N-butane is a colorless and flammable gas at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure, with mildly unpleasant smell, insoluble in water and freely soluble in alcohol and chloroform.
Main applications
N-butane is dehydrogenated to produce butylene or butadiene;
N-butane is isomerized to isobutane in the presence of sulfuric acid or AHF (anhydrous hydrofluoric acid);
N-butane is used to produce maleic anhydride, acetic acid and acetaldehyde, etc. through catalytic oxidization;
N-butane is halogenated to produce halogenated butane;
N-butane is nitrified to produce nitrobutane;
N-butane is used to produce carbon disulfide at high temperature;
Furthermore, n-butane could be taken as an admixture to motor fuel to control volatile ingredient, as raw material to produce liquid fuel of high octane value, deasphalting agent for heavy oil refining, precipitating agent for oil well paraffinication, overflow agent for secondary oil recovery, resin foaming agent, refrigerant to convert sea water to fresh water, as well as polymer chemistry polymerization solvent.
